Community Driven Rural Development-CDRD Project.

Project Overview:

The GIZ-CDRD project aims to improve the implementation of community driven, and risk informed income generating measures for the development of rural areas. The project addresses the twin issues of rural development and disaster risk management through a participatory approach. It is relying on the involvement, insight, and input of local, rural communities to identify their own problem situations selected and employed to pinpoint potential “hot spots” that local knowledge alone may have overlooked or missed. Caritas Switzerland (CACH) will implement the component of strengthening the capacities of the rural communities for comprehensive disaster risk management.

Since 2022 the project has been active in eight selected bomas. In these bomas, CDRD supported the formation of Community Development Committees (CDCs), and of Disaster Risk Management Committees (DRM-C). The CDCs are responsible for the development of the community (community projects), while the DRM-Cs are responsible for the identification of risks and hazards and the development of mitigation measures. DRM-C related activities carried out so far are:

  1. Community awareness workshops on DRM held
  2. DRM committees established
  3. Risk profiles for the 8 Bomas developed
  4. DRMC orientation workshops held
  5. Further trainings are being prepared, all to capacitate the DRM-C to develop and implement plans for disaster risk management.
